Design and Specifications of the 1822 Cent
The 1822 Cent, also known as the Coronet Head or Matron Head Large Cent, was part of the early copper coinage of the United States. This coin represents a transitional period in American numismatics, as the country was still establishing its monetary system and refining its coin production techniques.
The design, introduced in 1816, was a modification of the Classic Head cent by Robert Scot, the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint. It continued the tradition of depicting Liberty on the obverse, a symbol of the young nation’s values and aspirations.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers
The condition of an 1822 Cent has a significant impact on its value. Due to the age of the coin and the copper composition, which is prone to corrosion and wear, finding high-grade examples is extremely challenging.
Uncirculated specimens are exceptionally rare and command substantial premiums. Even coins in Fine to Very Fine condition are considered desirable among collectors. The presence of original red color in the copper can significantly increase value, as most surviving examples have darkened over time.
Mintage: 2,072,339
Rarity Scale: Scarce
Circulation Status: Limited Circulation
Preservation Rarity: Extremely rare in grades MS60 and above
Varieties Errors: Normal Date, Large Date, and Small Date varieties exist
Market Demand: High, especially for well-preserved specimens
Strike quality is an important factor for 1822 Cents. Well-struck coins with full details, especially in Liberty’s hair and the wreath on the reverse, are more valuable. The date size varieties (Normal, Large, and Small) can also affect value, with some being scarcer than others.
Environmental damage, such as corrosion or porosity, can severely impact value. Coins with smooth, problem-free surfaces and attractive natural patina are highly sought after. Additionally, provenance from notable collections can add a premium to the coin’s value.
