Design and Specifications of the 1899 Dollar

The 1899 Morgan Silver Dollar was part of the long-running series of silver dollars minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, this coin played a crucial role in the American economy during the late 19th century. The year 1899 saw continued production of these coins, reflecting the ongoing demand for silver dollars in commerce and as a result of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers

Condition plays a crucial role in the value of 1899 Morgan Dollars. For the Philadelphia issue, with its low mintage, even circulated examples command a premium. Uncirculated specimens are highly sought after, with prices increasing significantly for coins graded MS65 and above.

The more common New Orleans and San Francisco issues are relatively affordable in lower grades, but their value increases exponentially in gem condition (MS65+). Coins with exceptional eye appeal, deep mirror-like surfaces (known as DMPL – Deep Mirror Prooflike), or attractive toning can command significant premiums.

Strike quality is particularly important for 1899 Morgan Dollars. Well-struck coins with full detail on Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers are more desirable. The presence of original mint luster significantly enhances value, especially for the Philadelphia issue.

Toning can greatly affect desirability and value. Coins with attractive, natural toning patterns are often sought after by collectors and can command substantial premiums. However, unattractive or artificial toning can decrease value.

For the New Orleans and San Francisco issues, prooflike and deep mirror prooflike surfaces are highly prized and can significantly increase a coin’s value, particularly when combined with high grades and minimal contact marks.
