Design and Specifications of the 1960 Cent
The 1960 Lincoln Cent marked the first year of the new Lincoln Memorial reverse design, replacing the Wheat Ears reverse that had been in use since 1909. This change coincided with the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth and represented a significant shift in American coinage design.
The new reverse, featuring the Lincoln Memorial, was created by Frank Gasparro and would remain on the cent until 2008. This transition made the 1960 cent a notable year for collectors, symbolizing the evolution of one of America’s most iconic coins.

Rarity Factors and Value Drivers
The condition of 1960 Lincoln Cents significantly impacts their value. While circulated examples are generally worth only face value, uncirculated coins can command premiums, especially in higher grades.
Mint State specimens with full original luster and minimal contact marks are highly sought after. Coins graded MS65 and above can be valuable, with MS67 and MS68 examples being quite rare and commanding substantial premiums.
For proof coins, the cameo contrast between the frosted design elements and mirrored fields is an important factor, with Deep Cameo examples being particularly desirable.

Date size varieties play a crucial role in the value of 1960 cents. Both Small Date and Large Date varieties exist for all mint locations, including proofs. The Small Date varieties are generally scarcer and more valuable, especially for the Philadelphia mint.
Strike quality is particularly important for the new Lincoln Memorial reverse. Well-struck coins with sharp details on the memorial columns and statue are more desirable.
Color and toning can also affect value. Coins with original red color (designated RD) are more valuable than those with brown (BN) or red-brown (RB) color. Attractive, natural toning can also enhance a coin’s appeal and value.
Lastly, any significant error coins, such as off-center strikes or die cracks, can command substantial premiums, especially if dramatic and well-preserved.
